Active in Search and Rescue (SAR) since 1985, Ken Lesperance has responded on hundreds of missions as a mantracker, dog handler, IC (Incident Command), diver, water rescue technician, and "ground pounder." assignments. He has taught NIMS/ICS (Incident Command System), SAR Management, FUNSAR, and many other SAR topics in multiple states and countries. Currently on the Board of Directors for the National Association for Search & Rescue (NASAR), he is an NASAR instructor and SARTECH Coordinator. Also involved in search and rescue, his wife is a SAR Master Trainer and active handler. Coincidentally, her search dog is named Raven.
Ken has a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration and is studying for his
Masters of Business Administration. He was a full time police officer in California
and Washington State and served as a volunteer Firefighter/EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) for nine years. Currently, he is Hawaii State HazMat Training Coordinator, Department of Homeland Security State Training POC, and State US&R Program Manager.
Background...
Ken Lesperance first contacted the production with concerns about some of the SAR terminology used on Search Dog's Raven related web sites. If there was confusion about the web site terms, Director Allex Michael began to wonder if her script also needed additional SAR fact checking. Search Dog's Raven already had one Technical Consultant...Kimberly Kelly Falconer, but Ms. Falconer primarily advised for scenes involving a missing Alzheimer's victim.
So Allex Michael contacted Ken Lesperance personally. Perhaps he hadn't anticipated a response from the film's Director, but the two struck up an immediate 'email' rapport. While recognizing the film as a commercial endeavor, Lesperance feels Search Dog's Raven can also serve to increase public awareness of Search and Rescue. Allex was already on the same wavelength, with her background as an educational writer, and convinced him to become the film's Terminology and Fact Consultant. Even if search related parts of the script are correct, having this confirmed by a National Association for Search & Rescue (NASAR) Board of Director slash mantracker slash search dog handler slash SAR instructor slash former cop, would cover her filmmaking butt.
As it turns out, Lesperance had few changes and was amazed at the accuracy of the script. He also felt that Allex Michael's fictional SAR gear is a logical evolution of current Search and Rescue technology.
