They had me wear a peach colored party dress and I had flowers in my hair. I was then hand picked to sit at a table with Graham Greene and Barry Corbin on my first day. Both actors were very nice to me, and I say this because principal actors generally don't speak to extras. It's also an unspoken rule that extras don't speak to principal actors.
Telling a number of funny stories, the film's costar Brett Cullen was also very sociable. He would tell a dumb blonde joke and then apologize to me.
I'm very grateful my first shots were with Graham Greene. With no experience, I was unaware that extras and actors talk and laugh silently in the background while other actors speak in the foreground. I quickly learned what to do just by watching Greene. It was amazing to see how much effort he put into his background performance. Though I bet he's no longer consciously aware of it. Too bad I wasn't around for his speaking scenes as I likely would have learned a lot more.
I've never seen The Hired Heart but hopefully I made it into at least one shot.
My second attempt as an extra doesn't really count. I showed up, but was never used, because the AD thought I was one of the actors. Sat there all day for nothing. The director apologized and offered me another day, but I politely declined. Still, a producer saw me on location and offered me a role in a potential series. I labored over an audition tape, which she loved, but the series never got off the ground. As I now know, most productions never do.
I then went in for a my first and last audition. The hallway was full of experienced actresses going over the part with great fervor. Then there was me. A fish out of water. With no experience, I quickly discovered I can't audition my way out of a paper bag with a gun to my head. I also had no ability to relate to the weird character or her lines and I could tell the director was just as appalled at my audition. Ironically, I later discovered that Graham Greene was part of this cast as well.
Extras were not held with much regard on my second extra job and the entire experience was really unpleasant. Demanding the presence of over a hundred extras, though maybe a couple dozen appeared on film, the disorganized director turned each ten hour day into eighteen hours of hell. This spread tension throughout the entire production. So little annoyances like ill fitting boots, a hot ugly western costume and lousy meals seemed a lot worse.
