NASAR stands for the National Association for Search And Rescue. When we asked to speak with one of their dog handling experts, they recommended Marian Hardy. Marian has been a search dog handler since January of 1981 with the search unit Mid-Atlantic D.O.G.S. (Dogs Organized for Ground Search). Her partner is a female German Shepherd named P.C.

Allex Michael: What makes a good search dog? Are larger working breeds best suited?
Marian Hardy: Yes and the hunting breeds. We use German Shepherds, Labradors, Golden Retrievers and there's been some Standard Schnauzers and even a Bull Mastiff. But they're quite heavy and not as agile in the rugged terrain. But they're good search dogs. Border Collies are often used in Britain with a few used in North America.

Smaller dogs can also make great search dogs, but may have difficulty negotiating rugged terrain like climbing rocks in mountainous areas.

Is breed intelligence a factor in a good search dog? Or do certain breeds make better searchers? Marian Hardy explains that all dog noses are thousands of times more sensitive than a human nose.
Marian Hardy: We give off scent all the time. We're like Pig Pen (in the Charlie Brown comics) with a little cloud of dust. Some of our scent is very light and carried on the air current and that's what air scent dogs will look for. They're trained to look for a generic human scent. To differentiate between deer and chipmunks and humans.
