After their search dog group moved to California, Marian and her friend Brook started up their own branch Mid-Atlantic D.O.G.S. with annual grants from NASAR and help from the company Pedigree. They also have a newsletter called SAR Dog Alert.

Allex Michael: Why do dogs have such an acute sense of smell as compared to humans?
Marian Hardy: Our olfactory takes up a very small area in our nose. The portion of our brain that processes that information is very small. Whereas in a dog, you have these little receptor cells all through that long nose of theirs. They are probably at least two thousand times more sensitive than we are. The portion of their brain that's devoted to processing messages from the olfactory cells is much larger.

Except for tracking dogs, most search dogs work off leash when searching. Although deaths are rare during active duty, Marian's first dog was killed during a search for a missing three year old. Cary, a German shepherd, had just alerted on some human scent. It was dusk and the person who was supposed to be stopping traffic on the road wasn't there. Cary was hit and killed.

Most searches involve finding kids, the elderly, hunters and the results of criminal action. Most search dog handlers are unpaid volunteers who have regular employment. All have made arrangements with their employers to take time off when the need arises.

For those of you interested in becoming a Search and Rescue Dog Handler, working with a SAR dog group really helps. Marian Hardy recommends reading search dog training books like

     'Scent and the Scenting Dog'
     'Ready, The Training of the Search and Rescue Dog'     and a search dog book by
     'The American Rescue Dog Association'

Inquire at your local library or the NASAR Bookstore, PO Box 3709. Fairfax. VA. 22038, sells SAR dog books, a video and NASAR conference proceedings with Marian's Water Search With Dogs paper. The National SAR Dog Directory is also available at NASAR with information about every U.S. dog unit. the environments they work in and their communication systems. A good resource for anyone who is responsible for body recovery and wish to use search dogs.
