Marian Hardy: In Kern River, California, one body was found after 192 days. In my opinion, as long as there's something there.
Water search dogs are the same as other SAR dogs except they are trained to detect human scent coming up from underwater. Even though most are considered indirect finds, because divers and dragging crews must still go under and locate the body, using dogs for water searches has spread across the United States since the early 1980's. Unfortunately, search dogs do have limitations. They can only detect where there is scent. So if the air temperature is colder than the water, if there's a strong wind or too much evaporation, a victim's scent may not be distinguishable. Also the presence of methane gas, often found in swampy areas, can confuse a search dog. This is because methane gas is also produced by a decomposing corpse.
Young dogs begin training by finding people. While an assistant holds the dog, the owner runs off and lies on the ground about a hundred yards away. The dog is told to 'Go Find' or whatever term you want to use. The puppy usually will run out and go to the person and start to lick them. Then they just praise and praise to reinforce it. The next step is essentially the same, except the holder puts their hand over the dog's eyes. The owner can also double back so the dog follows their trail. Then you go to someone the dog knows and then to strangers.

After seeing a SAR (Search and Rescue) dog demonstration, Marian felt it was a scarce resource and something that would be helpful. Meeting one day per week, in all weather conditions, she and her first dog trained for about a year to become operational. With ongoing training, teams never stop learning. Through working together for many miles and many, many hours, the handler and dog can read each other's body language.
