Ebbey: Found starving in a garbage dump, the ever social Ebbey was desperate for human attention. Now that she's a canine actor, this once abandoned dog has thousands of fans and receives lots of human adoration. Allex Michael and Ebbey were mobbed at the Banff Gondola as hundreds of Japanese tourists hugged and photographed the fictional search dog team. Emotionally exhausted from all the love, even dogs have to be careful what they wish for.
Ebbey the Search Dog was filmed over a two year period. Despite her initial large weight gain, on her way back from starvation, Ebbey put on about eight pounds during production. The white mark on her chest also faded slightly.
Filming had to stop for over a month, when Ebbey was bitten on the side by a 'friendly' black lab encountered in an urban off leash park.
When you see the search dog handler fall in the film, chances are she wasn't acting. Allex Michael took a number of falls, due to icy conditions and partially due to the intense tracking instincts of her semi-feral canine costar Ebbey. Tracking every critter scent in the vicinity, Ebbey would suddenly lunge at whatever mouse or squirrel happened to be nearby. If Allex wasn't ready, she would be pulled off her feet and dragged. Not so great if she was carrying camera equipment. Over time, Allex could predict when Ebbey was about to ambush prey and Ebbey tempered her wild lunges a bit.
Ebbey the search dog's talking groans are real. She is quite a little groaner when she doesn't want to do something or becomes bored.
